How To Fertilize Anthurium Plants

Appropriate fertilization of your anthurium is crucial. An excessive amount of plant foods could be harmful, while too little plant food means fewer flowers. To discover how to fertilize your anthurium well you need to know how the nutritional needs are met in its natural habitat.

In its natural habitat, nobody rides through the forest with a huge container of fertilizer and sprinkles it on these plants. They are, however, by means of two sources of food.
The first affected leaf litter. When the leaves fall from the gathering around the roots of these plants and when the leaves decay, they provide a constant source of nutrients. Second, minerals from massive dust storms on the African continent blown across the Atlantic and deposited on the plants when it rains.

These two sources are not much to offer in the way of nutrients, but what they offer is more than enough to ensure the welfare of these plants. The lesson to take away is that these plants need very little in the way of living. In fact, over-feeding is a significantly bigger problem than under-feeding. About Feed and you risk harming your plant. Under-feed and the worse that will happen is that your plant will grow more slowly.

There are two ways to fertilize your plant. The easiest way to feed your plant is to use a slow-release fertilizer. Two good alternatives Nutricote Osmocote 13-13-13 or 14-14-14. These fertilizers can last as much as three months or longer and will continuously supply the power for your installation. Simply apply a small amount and your installation will be good for several months.

The more difficult but much more powerful, method to feed your plant is to use a liquid fertilizer. Should you choose to go on this road, you want water in the fertilizer to 10 percent of its regular, recommended strength and use it weekly. This will be much trouble, but it can lead to more permanent larger flowers. But be careful not to give the plant too much fertilizer or it will die.
